Graduate Research In Humanities

The Institute administers the master's program in the humanities offered by the College of Arts and Letters. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary studies, cultural studies and critical theory, while allowing students to pursue individualized programs of study that incorporate work from varying humanities disciplines.

Mapping Lambert's Point collects oral histories from longtime residents of the predominantly lower-income neighborhood about significant places in the community, whether still standing or long gone, and then embeds those stories in a virtual map using geotagging. The project draws on principles from cultural geography, museum studies, and public history in order to provide the Lambert's Point community (which is adjacent to ODU) with a forum for sharing their experiences and perspectives.

MediaCommons is a community network for scholars, students, and practitioners in media studies, promoting exploration of new forms of publishing within the field. MediaCommons was founded with the support of the Institute for the Future of the Book, and with assistance from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Dr. Avi Santo, associate professor of communication and the Director of the Institute of Humanities at ODU, was a co-creator of the MediaCommons in 2006.

“ODU Writes a Book” was an experiment inspired by flash mob experiments in writing embraced within the digital humanities as means to A) bring communities together to engage in synergistic collective knowledge sharing practices, B) demonstrate how new technologies challenge popular imaginings of what constitutes “authorship” and “writing” in a digital era, and C) integrate the process and product of writing into a holistic experience shared communally that might in turn spawn new investments in writing and reading as lived, shared practices. It took place on February 11-12, 2014.

Database founder and principal researcher Kim Jenkins (Ryerson University) indicates this is "an online platform filled with open-source tools that expand the narrative of fashion history and challenge mis-representation within the fashion system".

The Italian Paleography website presents 102 Italian documents and manuscripts written between 1300 and 1700, with tools for deciphering them and learning about their social, cultural, and institutional settings. The site includes digitized images, a T-Pen, transcriptions, background essays, calligraphy books, historical manuscript maps, a handbook of Italian vernacular scripts, and additional resources.

The Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO) promotes and supports digital research and teaching across all arts and humanities disciplines, acting as a community-based advisory force, and supporting excellence in research, publication, collaboration and training.

centerNet is an international network of digital humanities centers formed for cooperative and collaborative action to benefit digital humanities and allied fields in general, and centers as humanities cyberinfrastructure in particular.

Founded in 2002, HASTAC (Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory) is an interdisciplinary community of humanists, artists, social scientists, scientists, and technologists that are changing the way we teach and learn.
