EndNote Help & Installation

Step 1: Download EndNote

If you are a currently registered ODU student, staff or faculty, you can download the EndNote 20 program free of charge.

  • Download the EndNote 20 software from the ITS Software/Services Catalog.
  • Once there, click on the link that says "Get Endnote Reference Manager Here For Windows (Sign-in Required)" OR ......for MAC ...
  • You will need your MIDAS username and password to access the page.
  • Save the EndNote .zip file to your downloads folder.

NOTE:

  • In order to install software you will need to have administrative rights on your machine.  It’s also best if no other applications are running. Before you begin, you may wish to back up any custom styles, import filters, and connection files from an earlier version of EndNote that you do not want overwritten.
  • EndNote 20 is the latest version available for use through Monarch MOVE and campus computers.
  • If you have any problems installing EndNote, you can contact the ITS help desk: https://www.odu.edu/its/helpdesk

Step 2: Install on a PC or MAC

Install on PC

NOTE:  If you are asked for a product key or 30-day trial, the install process didn't recognize you as an ODU user.  Try the installation process again and make sure to Extract All Files in Step 4.

  1. Quit Microsoft Word and all web browsers.
  2. Click DOWNLOAD (message may say: No preview available), then DOWNLOAD ANYWAY.
  3. SAVE the file to DOWNLOADS or DESKTOP (or elsewhere), then OPEN.
  4. IMPORTANT STEP:  Highlight the EndNote 20 folder, and "EXTRACT ALL FILES" [in IE, right-click the zip file and select EXTRACT ALL.] Then exit the zip program.
  5. In your Downloads folder, double-click the InstallEnX8 file folder. Then double-click the "ENX8Inst.msi" file (Windows Installer Package) to begin installation.  Then, click RUN.
  6. At the EndNote X8 Installation screen, click NEXT and ACCEPT.
  7. Click NEXT through the info screens, and then select an Installation Type:
    1. TYPICAL -- will install the most commonly used output styles, filters, connection files.
    2. CUSTOM -- will allow you to install all output styles, filters, and connection files (including ODU). In the list of features, click on each red X and click "Entire feature will be installed on local hard drive."
  8. Choose the destination folder (usually in C:Program Files) and click NEXT.
  9. Installation will take a few minutes. When done, click FINISH.
Install on MAC

  2. Open the EndNote X# Mac .zip file
