EndNote Help & Installation

EndNote is a powerful tool for acquiring, organizing and managing references. You may add references to your EndNote reference library in a variety of ways:

• Enter the reference manually
• Search a library catalog directly through EndNote
• Search a library database and export references directly into EndNote
• Import a PDF (with a DOI)

You may attach articles, images, media and other files to the references and also add your own notes, thus creating an organized library. 

“Cite While You Write” is a feature that allows you to incorporate references from your EndNote library directly into a Word document as in-text citations or footnotes and references.

EndNote is just one of many commercial citation management programs.  At ODU we have a site license, which means it's FREE for use by ODU faculty, staff, and registered students. There are two versions: the desktop version that must be installed on your computer, and an online version that is available anywhere you are.

EndNote is a very useful tool, especially if you are writing a dissertation or thesis or are involved in some other major research project,  or if you plan to re-use your references for other projects, papers, articles, etc.

If you just need a quick citation to put in your paper, EndNote might be more than you need.
