Locating Books in ODU Libraries

Print books owned by ODU Libraries are shelved using the Library of Congress classification system. Using the LC system results in books on the same topic having similar call numbers, and as a result they are usually close to each other on the shelf. If you use Monarch OneSearch to identify a few books on your subject and go to the shelf, you will often be able to browse nearby books and find others that interest you on the same or similar topics.

The Library of Congress has a specific subject heading, Genealogy, to find books on this topic. It can be a main heading or a subdivision under names of countries, cities, etc., and under ethnic groups and names of individual groups. Examples of subject searches:

Genealogy
Hispanic Americans--Genealogy
Kings--Genealogy
Nansemond County (Va.)--Genealogy
Presidents--United States--Genealogy
Virginia--Genealogy
