English Composition

This guide will help you with finding resources for argumentative writing and other English Composition assignments.

Library Resources

Monarch OneSearch

Monarch OneSearch is the main search box on the Libraries' homepage. You can use Monarch OneSearch to find scholarly articles, scholarly books, news, and film. You can also find news and background sources by using the limiters on the left-hand side of the page.

To find current information on a topic, you can limit your search to Newspapers. In Newspapers you will find current news and editorials. News can be a useful way to find out what is currently happening with a topic.

To find peer-reviewed journal articles on a topic, you can limit your search to Articles. Peer-reviewed research articles are based on findings from research projects, so while not as up to the minute as news, they are very reliable.

The image below shows you how to limit your resources to Newspapers or Articles after doing your search in Monarch OneSearch.

Encyclopedias and more

Encyclopedias and Subject Dictionaries can be a good way of reading up on background information to help you narrow a broad topic.

To search for a subject encyclopedia or dictionary in Monarch OneSearch, type in your broad topic and then the type of resource you need. For example: technology AND encyclopedia

Below you will see links to just some of our encyclopedias and dictionaries.

CQ Researcher

CQ Researcher is an excellent database for finding background resources pros and cons topics. It includes authoritative reports on political and social justice issues. Take advantage of the "pros and cons" feature on the left hand side of each topic page and the "timeline feature" on the right-hand side.
