What is EndNote?

EndNote is a powerful tool for acquiring, organizing and managing references. You may add references to your EndNote reference library in a variety of ways:

  • Enter the reference manually
  • Search a library catalog directly through EndNote
  • Search a library database and export references directly into EndNote
  • Import a PDF (with a DOI)

You may attach articles, images, media and other files to the references and also add your own notes, thus creating an organized library.

Cite While You Write” is a feature that allows you to incorporate references from your EndNote library directly into a Word document as in-text citations or footnotes and references.

EndNote is just one of many commercial citation management programs.  At ODU we have a site license, which means it's FREE for use by ODU faculty, staff, and registered students. There are two versions: the desktop version that must be installed on your computer, and an online version that is available anywhere you are.

EndNote 21 is now available.  We are still in the process of updating this libguide.  Here is a link that compares EndNote 21 and EndNote 20, click here.  Here is a list of new features available with EndNote 21 click here.

Do You Need EndNote?

EndNote is a very useful tool, especially if you are writing a dissertation or thesis or are involved in some other major research project,  or if you plan to re-use your references for other projects, papers, articles, etc.

If you just need a quick citation to put in your paper, EndNote might be more than you need.
