Introduction

This page provides a list of data and statistics sources that may be useful for Library and Information Studies. This list is not exhaustive and additional data sources can be found in the Data & Statistics library guide.

Keep in mind:

  • "Data" and "statistics" are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference. Statistics are a form of data that have been analyzed and summarized in some way. 
  • Be critical when viewing data and statistics. Verify the source, and be on the lookout for obvious errors and bias.

Federal Sources

U.S. Federal agencies host a wide variety of data and statistics, including:

State governments, such as Virginia sources shown below, host platforms for the sharing of state-level data:

City Sources

Cities often host their own open data portals, and the main Virginia ODP site in the above box links to many of them in the Commonwealth. Direct links for several are listed below:
