ORCID: Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier

Learn how to create and populate an ORCID and use it to support your research activities.

Step 1: Create An ORCID ID

  1. Go to ORCID.org/register
  2. Add basic information like your name and email address/es (institutional and personal), choose a default level of privacy for your profile, accept ORCID’s terms of use, and click “Register.”
    • If your name is already in the ORCID system, you’ll then be prompted to claim an existing profile or make a new one.
  3. Verify your address. You now have an ORCID iD!

Step 2: Complete your ORCID Profile

Once you have your ORCID, you can customize it by adding:

  1. Variations of your name (Also known as)
  2. Websites and social links: your personal website; your Google Scholar and other scholarly profiles
  3. Other scholarly identifiers (Scopus ID; Researcher ID)
  4. Keywords that will identify your research areas
  5. Countries or locations where you have conducted research or where your research is focused
  6. A biography providing information about yourself, research interests, etc.

Continue by adding information as appropriate in the remaining categories: EMPLOYMENT; EDUCATION

Privacy Preferences

For all of the categories, you will be asked to set the Privacy Preferences for selected items or your entire profile. 

  • Everyone (Default)
  • Trusted Parties:
    • You can grant permission to one or more trusted individuals to update your ORCID record, as long as they have an ORCID account. 
    • You can also grant permission to trusted organizations - for example, a publisher may request permission to get your ORCID iD when you submit a manuscript. See more about trusted organizations on the ORCID website.
  • Only Me

Note: If you set your publications or funding sources to "Only Me," you will not be able to export them to other systems.
