Data Management @ ODU

Find out about research data management.

Federal and Private Funder Requirements

Please refer to the Research Data Management Funder Policies library guide for information regarding federal and private funder public access plans, data access requirements, and additional resources.

The Research Data Management Funder Policies includes information about the NIH Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy (effective January 25, 2023).

Journal Requirements

Many journals support open data initiatives to varying degrees. Many journals also support the inclusion of a data availability statement, which is a statement about the data used in the publication and where and/or how that data can be accessed. Cambridge University Press shows examples on their Data availability statements page but always be sure to check specific journal requirements.

Several examples of journal data sharing policies are outlined below.

Wiley

Wiley supports four data sharing policy categories from encouraging to mandating data sharing, depending on the journal. Refer to Wiley's Data Sharing Policies for additional information about these categories. Wiley has also endorsed the FORCE11 Data Citation Principles, and expects data citations to be included in the reference list. In addition, Wiley has partnered with Dryad and several journals pay the fee for sharing data through Dryad. Refer to Wiley's Data Sharing with Dryad page for additional information.

Springer Nature Group/Nature Portfolio

As of March 22, 2023, Springer Nature introduced mandatory data availability statements across the journals portfolio. Please see this press release for additional information.

According to Nature Portfolio Reporting standards and availability of data, materials, code and protocols, it is a condition of publication that "authors are required to make materials, data, code, and associated protocols promptly available to readers without undue qualifications. Any restrictions on the availability of materials or information must be disclosed to the editors at the time of submission. Any restrictions must also be disclosed in the submitted manuscript."

Taylor & Francis

According to Taylor & Francis' Understanding our data sharing policies webpage, over 2,000 journals have policies regarding how data should be shared. This webpage gives an overview of the various data sharing policies Taylor & Francis has in place, and instructs authors to review specific journal policies to find out which policy applies.

IEEE

Publishing policies indicates IEEE promotes sharing data and code and maintains the IEEE DataPort for authors to deposit datasets, while also encouraging the use of Code Ocean, figshare, Zenodo, and Dryad. Please note not all dataset files within IEEE DataPort are open access and a paid subscription might be necessary to access some datasets. Open access dataset files are accessible to all logged in users, and users can create a free account.

Elsevier

Elsevier provides a page on Sharing research data but encourages authors read the Research Data section in the Guide for Authors for specific journals to check specific data-sharing policies.
