Website Evaluation

How do you know if a website is reliable? Use this chart as a guide!

A cool website on my topic!

Ask: Is the information current enough? Can I tell when the website was last updated?

Ask: How accurate is the information on this website? Does the information I'm reading match with general information on this topic I found other places or does it seem really different? Is the grammar and spelling ok on the site?

Ask: Who wrote this?

If the answer is "A Person", then ask: Who are they? Are they an expert on the topic I am researching? Are they affiliated with any organization? Could they have a bias about this topic?

If the answer is "An Organization", then ask: What does this organization do? Are they experts on this topic? Could they have a bias about this topic?

If the answer is "A lot of people, like Wikipedia", then ask: Who can edit the page? Could anyone edit the page? Does the information seem accurate? Could I find this information somewhere else that might be more reliable?

If the answer is "I don't know or can't tell", then try this: Look for a link that says "about this site". Try visiting the home page of the main website to see if it has more information.
