Importance of Data for LIS

Librarians use data in a variety of ways, including:

  • Assessing collections (ex. circulation information)
  • Patron engagement and programming (ex: age groups or demographics of those using, or not using, services)
  • Community assessment (ex: internet access, transportation)
  • Performance (following trends in the library over time)

Adapted from Is Your Library Using Data Effectively? Here’s How to Know. (note the post is sponsored by LibraryIQ)

Academic librarians in particular may also need to help students and researchers find, manage, and share research data.
