Open Access

Find out what "Open Access" is, why it's important, and where you can find open access journals, books and resources.

Open Access Policies

An increasing number of universities are adopting Open Access policies. The Registry of Open Access Repositories Mandatory Archiving Policies (ROARMAP) "is an international registry charting the growth of open access mandates adopted by universities, research institutions and research funders that require their researchers to provide open access to their peer-reviewed research article output by depositing it in an open access repository." As of December 2022, there are 1114 policies worldwide. In the U.S., there are 148 policies, with 115 at research institutions. In Virginia, Virginia Tech is the only university in Virginia with an open access policy for all affiliated researchers.

Open Access policies vary as to requirement vs recommendation for placing a version in the university's repository, which version, which content types, and embargo options.
