Collection Development Policy
The Collection Development Services program supports the mission and goals of the University Libraries by evaluating, selecting, and allocating funds for the acquisition of materials needed to support the University’s curriculum, research, distance learning, and other programs. Contact your collection bibliographer for information about your subject policy, or contact the Collection Development Officer at 683-4148 for the overall collection policy.

Library Consortia

The ODU Libraries participate in several academic library consortia that help enhance our services and collections as well as promote professional development among librarians and library staff members.

Virginia Tidewater Consortium
Find information and policies of the libraries in the area who provide borrowing privileges and other resources to the ODU community.
VIVA (Virtual Library of Virginia)
VIVA is the consortium of non-profit academic libraries within the Commonwealth of Virginia. VIVA libraries provide borrowing privileges to the ODU community through the Cooperative Borrowing Program.
Eastern Academic Scholars Trust (EAST)
Eastern Academic Scholars Trust (EAST) is the collaborative effort of a large group of academic and research libraries to document, protect, and provide long-term access to their print collections. EAST directly addresses the growing need for academic and research libraries to ensure that print books and journals of scholarly value are not inadvertently discarded as libraries undertake necessary weeding and deselection programs to free up space for other library services.
ASERL: Association of Southeastern Research Libraries
ASERL brings together leaders from research libraries in the region to foster a high standard of library excellence through professional development, inter-institutional resource sharing, and other important collaborations. For more than 65 years, ASERL has been a trusted home for numerous innovative programs and events that provide tremendous benefit to our membership. ODU became a member in 2024.
